What We Believe

At Upper Cumberland Midwifery Services our philosophy is based on the understanding that pregnancy is a normal life occurrence, rather than a medical event, and birth is a natural process. We offer professional midwifery care for prenatal, birth, and postpartum periods.

We provide an alternative choice to the medicalized standard of care given to pregnant women at local hospitals. The care is about building a trusting relationship with clients by providing continuity of care.

"We wholeheartedly uphold freedom of choice, and in turn believe women should have the autonomy to decide where to birth and with whom."

Our Commitments to You

We believe birth can be a transformative life event, and desire women to become empowered by their birth experience.

Safeguard your privacy by protecting the confidentiality of the care you receive.

To serve as educator, adviser, and care provider, but not to make decisions for you. Rather, we strive to assist women in making their own informed choices.

UCMS Model of Care

  • Birth as a Natural Process
Pregnancy and birth are understood as normal, healthy life experiences—not medical conditions that require routine intervention.

  • Care That Is Personal and Responsive
Care is shaped around each mother’s physical, emotional, and family needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

  • Thoughtful Use of Intervention
Interventions are used when truly needed, not as routine—allowing the body to labor and birth as it was designed.

  • Continuity of Care and Support
Care includes time and attention throughout pregnancy, steady presence during labor and birth, and ongoing support in the postpartum period.

  • Shared Decision-Making and Trust
The relationship between midwife and client is collaborative, with open communication, informed choices, and respect for the mother’s voice.

  • Safety with Clear Boundaries
Midwives are trained to recognize when additional care is needed and will recommend or arrange transfer when it is the safest option for mother and baby.
